原作は紙の方で途中まで買っていて
その後を追えていなかった。

映画の前半までは
知っているエピソード。

モヤモヤして
原作購入し外伝まで一気に読んだ。

何のエピソードを選ぶか
難しい。

フィクションを通じて、
起こったことの真実に迫った原作なので、
映画化にあたっては
エピソードの取捨選択は苦労したんだろうと。

後半にあれ？
って思った場面は、
（主人公たちがキングコングを観る場面）
原作では、そこに至る経緯があったので
違和感はなかった。

個人的には140分か180分くらいの尺があればなぁ
と思ってしまった。

ただ何を選ぶかは、
やはり難しい。

興味を持たれた方は、
原作を当たって欲しい。

戦場に普通の人が行くとは
どういうことなのか、
外伝まで当たると、
見えてくる。

市井の生活と戦争の関係、
その中で起こること、
フィクションだからこそ
三頭身のキャラにしたからこそ
リアルに感じると思います。

戦後80年の今年に観ていい映画です。

I had bought the original manga in print and read partway through it,
but I hadn’t kept up with the rest.

Up through the first half of the film,
the episodes were ones I already knew.

Feeling unsettled,
I bought the manga again and read straight through, including the spin-off.

Choosing which episodes to include
must have been extremely difficult.

Because the original work approaches the truth of what actually happened
through fiction,
the filmmakers must have struggled with selecting and omitting episodes
when adapting it for the screen.

The moment in the latter half where I thought,
“Huh?”
(the scene where the protagonists watch King Kong),
didn’t feel strange in the original,
because there was a lead-up that explained how they got there.

Personally, I found myself wishing
the running time had been around 140 or even 180 minutes.

That said,
deciding what to include is, after all,
still very difficult.

If this has sparked your interest,
I strongly recommend turning to the original work.

What it really means
for ordinary people to be sent to a battlefield
becomes clearer when you also read the spin-off.

The relationship between everyday life and war,
and what happens within it—
precisely because it is fiction,
and precisely because the characters are drawn in a super-deformed style,
it feels real.

In this year, eighty years after the war,
this is a film worth watching.
