「ハムレットのリブートなのか・・・Is this… a reboot of Hamlet?」果てしなきスカーレット　新米エヴァンゲリストさんの映画レビュー（感想・評価）

予告編見て観ようと思った。
（なのでプロモーションは成功している）

主人公の声は全く誰か分からなかったが
相手役の声に聞き覚えがあって
誰か分からなかったのでポスター見たら
相手役は岡田将生さん。
そうだそうだ、と思って左側見ると
【芦田愛菜】・・・
え？芦田愛菜？

主人公のスカーレットが？

そして鑑賞。

事前情報なしでの感想は、

芦田愛菜さん何でも出来るな、
歌も上手いし、
声優としてもすごい。

ストーリーはシンプルなのか
複雑なのか、
よく分からず、
設定のデンマークはOKなのか？
舞台になる世界はいったい・・。
細田守監督の思いが強すぎる？
等だった。

観賞後、パンフレットを見ると、
シェークスピアのハムレットを元にしている
と監督のインタビュー記事。

え？シェークスピアのハムレット？

慌てて調べる。
完全に下敷きにして、
舞台はデンマーク王室（それなら問題ないか）
登場人物の名前もそのまま
役割もほぼそのまま、
主人公の名前だけ違う。
もっと言うなら主人公の謀殺された父親が
ハムレットの名前の元になったアムレット。
話の流れの設定はほぼそのままで
一番の肝になる「ある根本的な動機」の部分が、
現代の価値観に合わせて
反対になっていた。

文字通り、ハムレットを
現代の流れに合わせてリブートしたことになる。

もちろんハムレットを知らなくても
大丈夫だけれど、
深く知るためには、その土壌はあったほうが良い。

ただ、私の知識が皆無なのを踏まえても
生者と死者の狭間の世界に飛ぶ？
仇も死んでいるのなら、仇討の意味は？
その飛ばされた世界で、
なんでうまいこと仇である叔父は王になっている？
仇の側近は、なんか知り合いっぽいけど、共に死んでる？
と観ながら沢山気になりすぎて、
何が言いたいんだろう？
何を受け取ればいいんだろう？
と思ってしましました。

イギリスの人なら、ハムレットは常識かもしれない。
欧米の人もそうか。
ただひょっとしたら、教育水準の高い層に限られる？
日本人は？と問われれば
演劇やっている人は基礎知識なのかな？
（今やっているドラマ見ると）
それ以外はほぼほぼ知らないんじゃないか。

この作品は一体誰向けなんだ？

生者と死者の狭間の世界に
登場人物が飛ばされた段階で
物語が破綻しているように感じて、
映画が発しているメッセージに
何の意味があるか？
と思ってしまった。

一人で最後まで行ってしまって、
誰も意見を差し挟めなかったんだろうか？

少なくとも芦田愛菜さんは、
彼女の知性により、リブートの意味を理解し、
物語に全ての力を全振りしたことは伝わったので
彼女のおかげで作品としては成り立っている。

そこには賛辞を贈りたい。

I decided to watch the film after seeing the trailer.
(So the promotion definitely worked.)

I couldn’t recognize the protagonist’s voice at all,
but the voice of the co-star sounded familiar.
When I checked the poster to figure out who it was,
I saw Masaki Okada’s name.
“Right, right,” I thought—and then my eyes moved left.

Mana Ashida.
Wait—Mana Ashida?!
She’s the voice of Scarlet?

And then the screening began.

My impressions going in with no prior information:

Mana Ashida really can do anything—
she sings well,
and she’s genuinely impressive as a voice actor.

As for the story,
I couldn’t tell if it was simple or complicated.
Is Denmark as a setting supposed to be fine?
What exactly is this world the story takes place in?
Was Mamoru Hosoda’s vision simply too strong?
Those were my initial thoughts.

After watching the film, I read the pamphlet
and found an interview where the director said
it was based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

What? Hamlet??

I rushed to look it up.
It really is built directly on Hamlet:
the setting is the Danish royal family (so that part makes sense),
the characters’ names are mostly the same,
their roles are almost unchanged,
only the protagonist’s name differs.
To add more, the murdered father is “Amleth,”
the origin of the name Hamlet.
The story structure follows the original almost entirely,
except that the core “fundamental motive” has been inverted
to match modern sensibilities.

In other words, it’s Hamlet rebooted
for a contemporary audience.

Of course, you can watch it without knowing Hamlet,
but having that foundation definitely deepens the experience.

Still, even with my lack of knowledge, I found myself thinking:

They jump into the realm between the living and the dead—why?
If the murderer is already dead, what’s the point of revenge?
And in that afterworld,
why is the uncle—who should also be dead—somehow reigning as king?
His henchmen seem familiar too,
but they’re dead as well… aren’t they?

I had so many questions that I kept wondering,
What is this film trying to say?
What am I supposed to take away from this?

Perhaps in the UK, Hamlet is common knowledge.
Maybe in the West as well—
though possibly only among the more educated?
In Japan?
Perhaps people in theatre know the basics
(judging from the current drama airing now),
but most others likely have almost no familiarity with it.

So who exactly is this film for?

The moment characters were thrown into
the world between life and death,
the story felt like it fell apart for me,
and I couldn’t grasp what meaning
the film’s “message” was supposed to hold.

Did the film end up being carried all the way through
by a single person’s vision,
with no one stepping in to give another perspective?

At the very least, Mana Ashida fully understood
what it meant to reboot Hamlet,
and she poured everything she had into the role.
Thanks to her, the work manages to hold together.

For that, she deserves genuine praise.
