I like his smile
This movie is nothing like the Japanese posters; there are no scenes of comedy, but the bleak reality of life catching up.
This man, with a sufficient job and a good friend who shares a common hobby, isn't "grown" enough to be accepted as normal in the current society. He has a heart like no other, but its pure selflessness comes of inexperience and being cut off from the social world; which to many, is not a act of a "grown person."
Though I can see how he does not share the common acts or mental answers one might have for such situations portrayed in the film, I felt his act of kindness towards the heroine and her illness was not an easy decision. It was like an excellent show of his state of heart, when his act felt like it came of pure kindness of immaturity, and helplessness of maturity combined.
Then again, we only get a moment of relief from the bleak reality, as his kindness is returned in vain. This really added to the "reality." cause in reality, things are too hard to simply blame someone but the situation itself.
I enjoyed how in the end, he was able to exit his repetitive life and enter a voyage with a worrying grin.
