The Deer Hunter is unpredictable. For the first hour which is a wedding scene, I was beginning to wonder if I had been misinformed that this was a Vietnam War movie. The war act comes into play as a metaphor with the Russian roulette game. It's grim and you can see where Vietnam War movies pulled their gruesomeness cues, but The Deer Hunter lives in its own imaginative universe. Somewhat bizarre.
