フランク・ミラー（, 1957年1月27日 - 、アメリカ合衆国メリーランド州出身）はアメリカのコミックライター兼アーティストであり、『デアデビル』シリーズ、『』、『シン・シティ』シリーズ等のアメリカン・コミック、グラフィック・ノベルの原作者。アラン・ムーアと並び現代最高のライターとの呼び声も高い。また、2005年には自作の映画化作品『シン・シティ』によって映画監督デビュー（ロバート・ロドリゲスとの共同監督）を果たしている。映画監督としての最新作は2008年公開の『ザ・スピリット』であり、初の単独監督作品でもある。アイルランド系のカトリック教徒。

人物

1979年にマーベル・コミックスでデビュー。1980年に『デアデビル』のアーティストに就任し、シリーズ中盤からはライターも兼任するようになる。そのハードボイルドに徹したストーリーとアートは多くの読者を魅了し、一躍人気アーティストの一員となった。また、本作に登場する人気キャラクターで、後に映画化もされた『エレクトラ』の生みの親でもある。1983年にはDCコミックスにて、フランスのメビウスらの影響を受けた斬新なアートによるSF時代劇『ローニン』を発表し話題を集める。

そして、1986年に発表した『』においてアメリカン・コミックのスーパーヒーローものを現代的な視点で描き、アメコミの改革の足がかりを作った。『ダークナイト・リターンズ』とアラン・ムーアの『ウォッチメン』の出現によってそれまでのアメコミに一般的であった善悪二元論が見直され、コミックが大人も楽しめるものに変わっていったとされる。本作は、翌年に発表した『バットマン：イヤーワン』と共に、後のバットマン・シリーズに多大な影響を与えた。

1991年からはダークホースコミックでオリジナル作品『シン・シティ』シリーズの連載を開始、新たな代表作として評価を得る。 1998年には紀元前480年のテルモピュライの戦いを題材にしたオリジナルストーリー『300』を発表。翌年のアイズナー賞において「最優秀リミテッドシリーズ」「最優秀ライター/アーティスト」「最優秀カラリスト」の主要3賞を独占した。 2001年には『バットマン:ダークナイト・リターンズ』の続編となる『』を15年ぶりに発表し大きな話題を呼んだ。 2005年からは人気アーティストのジム・リーと組んだ新シリーズ『オールスター・バットマン＆ロビン・ザ・ボーイワンダー』を展開している。 2006年に、バットマンとアルカイダが戦う『ホーリー・テラー・バットマン』の製作を発表したが、2011年にバットマンとは直接関係がない『ホーリー・テラー』として発売された。

ハードボイルドなセリフ回しとストーリー、緻密でリアリティのある心理描写と骨太な画風が主な特徴。

映画人としての活躍

1990年に『ロボコップ2』の脚本を依頼されてハリウッドに招かれたが、脚本は他の脚本家によって手が加えられ、完成した映画はミラー本人が見てもワケが判らなかったと言う。『ロボコップ3』での仕事以降は『デアデビル』のカメオ出演を除けば、映画製作に直接関わることはなかったが、2005年に原作の大ファンだというロバート・ロドリゲス監督が、『シン・シティ』の映画化に際して共同監督を依頼してきたのである。既に10年以上も前から映画化の話を断り続けてきたミラーはこのオファーも断った。しかし、ロドリゲス監督の熱望で彼がテスト映像として撮影したジョシュ・ハートネットとマーリー・シェルトンの登場するアバンタイトルを見せたところ、依頼を快諾したという。 なお、『ロボコップ2』、『ロボコップ3』、『デアデビル』、『シン・シティ』にカメオ出演している。また、2008年公開の『ザ・スピリット』でミラーは監督を務めており、単独で監督を務めたのは本作が初となる。これはミラーが少年時代に影響を受けた近代アメリカンコミックの先駆者、ウィル・アイズナーが1940年に発表したハードボイルド作品であり、ミラーは警官役で出演もしている。
