ジョン・メレンキャンプ（John Mellencamp、1951年10月7日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国インディアナ州シーモア出身のシンガーソングライターである。デビュー当時の芸名は、ジョン・クーガー（John Cougar）。1983年に、ジョン・クーガー・メレンキャンプ（John Cougar Mellencamp）と改名し、1991年から本名のジョン・メレンキャンプを名乗る。2018年11月、女優のメグ・ライアンとの婚約を発表メグ・ライアンとジョン・メレンキャンプ、7年越しのゴール間近！ (Esquire（エスクァイア 日本版）) - LINE NEWS。
略歴
ジョン・クーガー時代
1970年代半ばに、トラッシュというグラムロックのバンドで活動していた時期に、デヴィッド・ボウイの敏腕マネージャーであったトニー・デフリーズに見出され、デビュー。グラムロッカーとして化粧をし、芸名をジョニー・クーガー（Johnny Cougar）とするが、彼の意に沿うものではなく、まもなくレコード会社を移籍し、芸名もジョン・クーガーとする。アメリカでの初ヒットは79年末「I Need A Lover（邦題：アイ・ニード・ラヴァー）」で、ビルボードHOT100で最高位28位。その後も、「This Time（80年 全米27位）」、「Ain't Even Done With The Night（夜が泣いている：81年 全米17位）」と着実にヒット曲を出す。大ブレイクしたのが1982年。アルバム「American Fool（ビルボード誌アルバムチャート全米No.1）」からのシングル「Hurts So Good（青春の傷あと)」が最高位2位、続くセカンドシングル「」が全米1位の大ヒットとなり、名実ともに人気ロッカーの仲間入りを果たす。イギリスでも「」がシングル初チャートイン（最高位25位）した。なお、上記の「I Need A Lover（邦題：アイ・ニード・ラヴァー）」の日本盤シングルでは、アーティスト表記はジョニー・クーガーとなっている（ワーナー・パイオニア：P－528）。
ジョン・クーガー・メレンキャンプ時代
1983年にジョン・クーガー・メレンキャンプと改名し、「Uh-Huh」（邦題「天使か悪魔か」）を発表。「CRUMBLIN' DOWN」（9位）、「Pink Houses 」（8位）などビルボード誌でTOP10入りする。ローリング・ストーン誌はこのアルバムを「1980年代の偉大な100枚」の32位に選んだ。
1985年に発表した「Scarecrow」からも「Lonely Ol' Night」（6位）、「Small Town」（6位）、「R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.」（2位）のシングルがトップ10入りした。同年には、ウイリー・ネルソンと共に、困窮するアメリカの農家のためのチャリティーイベント「ファーム・エイド」を開催。都市から見放されがちな田舎、農村の代弁者としての立場を強くするようになり、音楽性もカントリーやフォークの色が濃いアコースティックなものに変容していった。その音楽性は、1987年に発表した「The Lonesome Jubilee」で強く見出すことが出来、このアルバムからも「Paper in Fire」（9位）と「Cherry Bomb」（8位）、「Check It Out」のヒット曲を生んだ。その間の1986年には、日本武道館とフェスティバルホールでの来日公演を行った。
ジョン・メレンキャンプ時代
1991年に、ようやく本名のジョン・メレンキャンプ名義で「Whenever We Wanted」を発表。翌1992年には、4年ぶりのワールド・ツアーも行った。映画業界にも同年から進出しており、インディアナ州が舞台の『Falling from Grace』で主演と監督を務めたものの、商業的には成功しなかった。1993年に「Human Wheels」、1994年に「Dance Naked」、1996年に「Mr. Happy Go Lucky」のアルバムを発表したが、以前ほどの成功は収められなかった。21世紀に入ると、新たな音楽性を求め、ラップグループのパブリック・エネミーのチャックDなど組み、「Cuttin' Heads」を発表した。インディアナ州ブルーミントンに住まいを構えるジョンは、同地にあるインディアナ大学のバスケットボールチームのシーズンチケットを購入しており、その関係から同大学の前学長が代表を努めるNCAAのバスケットボール大会の一環として、2006年にインディアナポリスの街中で無料コンサートを行い、5万人の観衆を集めた。同年の夏頃から、シボレーのCM曲として「Our Country」が流れ始め、大変な人気を集めた関係もあり、2007年に発表した5年ぶりのアルバム「Freedom's Road」は、初動ランキングで5位にランクイン。これは1985年の「Scarecrow」がマークした2位に次ぐ、最高位になっている。また、同年には人気作家スティーヴン・キングと共に、ブロードウェイミュージカルの仕事を行っている。
2012年、スティーブン・キングと共同でホラー・ミュージカル『』を制作し、4月から5月にかけてアトランタで上演された。曲の録音にはエルヴィス・コステロ、クリス・クリストファーソン、シェリル・クロウなどが参加している。2013年10月10日から11月6日にかけて、中西部と南部の20都市をツアーした"スティーブン・キングはじめ、意外な大御所３人がミュージカルを共作『ゴースト・ブラザース』":PUNTA（2013年7月1日）.2013年10月12日閲覧。
