On the Manipulative Nature of Directors
After watching a baker's dozen of Hong Sangsoo's films, one can see the director is comfortable tethered to his own languid style. His characters reappear across films, with hidden vexations unwoven through extended dining out scenes. You know what kind of activity to expect, and the undertones are heavy-handed reflections on human relationships. His filmmaker characters suffer lonely male agony.
