The original's screenwriter Hampton Fancher helps the story plug into the first film without doing any damage to it as a standalone film, but 2049 sometimes is like a TV drama pulling stylistic cues from the first one--overly long and slow because the first one was long and slow, not so much because there is a story unfolding on the screen. Still, as a fan of the original, it is hard not to like.
