Three decades before 1917, Come and See was another film that explored the horrors of war through the lens of one ordinary day. Set during World War II, the story follows Flyora, a bold young boy who, while digging up rifles, is conscripted into the local militia. The film immerses us in his journey as we confront his look of terror while he witnesses his village burned to the ground and his neighbors massacred.

With episodes of violence and conflict continuing to occur in parts of the former Soviet Union, it’s no wonder that historical trauma contributes to Russia’s complex relationship with the West today.
