この映画を観るまで
「聖域都市」なる言葉を知らなかった。
不法移民、不法な状態になった外国人などを
保護する都市のことを指すらしい。
北米などに実在する。

レオナルドディカプリオ演じる主人公たちは
若かりし頃
革命家を名乗り、これら不法移民を助けたり、
気に入らない政治家に対して爆弾を爆発させたりする。

普通に暮らす人々は、この映画にとっては
ただの背景、NPCにすぎない。

物語を彩るのは
イカレタ革命家同士から娘が出来て
今は元革命家になった父親とその娘や
今なお、革命家を名乗る現役のメンバー、
元革命家のせいで目覚めてしまった変態の警察官、
KKKを思わせる白人至上主義のイカレタ連中
など、多くの普通の人からはかけ離れた人たち。

ただ、これがフィクションかと言われると、
全くの荒唐無稽な話とは言えないんだろうな
という迫力はある。

一般市民風になった娘と暮らす元革命家だったが
イカレタ革命家だった過去が追いかけてくる。

法を破って「イェーイ！」なんてことをしたことない身からすると
全く理解できないし、1mmも共感できないが
現実世界のある意味断片なのは理解した。

地続きの国境がある国の実態としては
なかなかの地獄だなと感じた。

Until I watched this film, I’d never heard the term “sanctuary city.”
Apparently, it refers to a city that protects undocumented immigrants or foreigners living in illegal circumstances — and such cities actually exist in North America.

The characters led by Leonardo DiCaprio were once self-proclaimed revolutionaries who helped illegal immigrants and bombed politicians they didn’t like.

Ordinary people in this movie are nothing more than background — mere NPCs.

The story is colored by an eccentric mix of people:
a former revolutionary and his daughter, born from two insane radicals;
current members still clinging to the revolutionary cause;
a deranged cop awakened by the former revolutionary’s past;
and a group of white supremacists reminiscent of the KKK —
all far removed from anything resembling normal society.

Yet despite how fictional it seems, there’s a certain intensity that makes it feel not entirely implausible.

The ex-revolutionary now lives quietly with his daughter, who appears to be an ordinary citizen — but his deranged past comes back to haunt him.

As someone who’s never once broken the law and shouted “Yeah!” about it, I couldn’t relate in the slightest — not even a millimeter.
But I could still understand that this film reflects a fragment of the real world.

It made me realize just how hellish life can be in countries with continuous land borders.
