自分にとって良い映画かどうかの基準は
観る前と後で、世界が変わって見えるかどうかだ。

その意味で、良い映画だった。

日本、台湾、アメリカ、移民など
ルーツの異なる登場人物が
英語、台湾語、日本語、スペイン語（？）で
繰り広げられる。

始まって程なく、
気にならなくなる。

暮らしていれば
小さな後悔、
小さな蟠り（わだかまり）はある。

主人公の賢治は、妻のジェーンに
子供のカイに、
そして自分の過去に、積み上がったものがある。

彼の仕事は、過去に強く影響を受けている。
おそらく阪神淡路大震災と思われる。
その影響は、個人的に理解できる。

妻ジェーンも、子供のカイに、
夫の賢治に、そして自分の過去に。

二人の後悔と蟠りで、他の人々を巻き込みながら
物語が進んでいく。

正しいとか間違っているとかではなく、
それぞれの想いが交錯し、
人々を突き動かし、
エンディングを迎える。

アメリカという国の
ルーツを別に持つ人々の集合体であることも
観ているものに突きつけてくる。

ああ、だから「Dear stranger」なのか。

メインキャストは、全員
strangerだったよ。
日本人、台湾人、黒人、おそらく南米からの移民。

考え続けることを観るものに求める
そんな映画でした。

My standard for whether a film is good or not is simple: does the world look different before and after watching it?

In that sense, this was a good film.

Characters of different backgrounds—Japanese, Taiwanese, American, immigrants—interact in English, Taiwanese, Japanese, and Spanish (?). But before long, the mixture of languages no longer feels unusual.

In life, we all carry small regrets, and also small, unspoken feelings that we cannot quite put into words.

The protagonist Kenji has accumulated these—toward his wife Jane, toward his son Kai, and toward his own past. His work, too, is strongly influenced by his past—most likely the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. That influence is something I can personally relate to.

Jane, his wife, also carries regrets and unspoken feelings—toward her son Kai, toward her husband Kenji, and toward her own past.

Together, their regrets and unspoken emotions drive the story forward, pulling other people into their orbit.

It isn’t about right or wrong. Rather, their emotions intersect, push people into action, and lead to the ending.

The film also confronts the audience with the reality that America is a collective of people whose roots lie elsewhere.

Ah, so that’s why it’s called Dear Stranger.
Stranger (noun): foreigner, outsider, someone unfamiliar.

All of the main cast were, in fact, “strangers”—Japanese, Taiwanese, Black, and likely immigrants from South America.

It is a film that demands its viewers keep thinking about it long after the credits roll.
