Film is Archaeology
There are many intriguing elements in Lou Ye's cut-up collage of a film, Unfinished. The most compelling aspect that stood out to me is the director's exploration of how film evolves—or devolves—over time. The narrative fluidly shifts between documentary footage, traditional film scenes, Zoom calls, and TikTok videos. This experimental approach might evoke comparisons to Jean-Luc Godard's later works, such as Farewell to Language or the more recent La Bête, both of which examine how our relationships with emerging technologies are reshaping narrative structures. However, unlike those films, which often mourn or satirize this new era, Lou Ye seeks to construct a cohesive meaning from these fragmented elements.
