A return to classical form. Limited to the size of its subject's eventful life and Europe's cross-politics, Scott manages to pack in all he sees fit. Phoenix's performance is among the best in decades. Held captive to romance while serving an alternative leadership style, much more thought is leant to the character than was to Columbus in 1492, though the costumes and sets are equally as lavish.
