「Japan appeared twice!」TAR ター 詠み人知らずさんの映画レビュー(感想・評価)
Japan appeared twice!
I really enjoyed watching ‘Tár’ in a small theater in Tokyo, that was called as a mini theater in Japan. This review may contain "spoiler" information, so I will write the review in English. When I saw this film, I immediately understood why historical, but one of the most challenging company, DG and the most brilliant orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, cooperated with this movie.
I think Todd Field, who wrote and directed it, moved the main character from a male conductor in the early 2000s to a female conductor in 2022. We know that two very famous conductors were socially excluded because of the "Me too" movement, and it was even mentioned in the movie. They had undoubtedly great talent and outstanding ability. There are some objections to this kind of cancellation culture. We also noticed that we had already lost one of conductors.
Lydia Tár, played by Cate Blanchett in this film, cannot be forgiven for what she did. I think that was probably related with why this movie didn't get an Academy Award. In fact, her behavior towards the other child was harsh, especially when her adopted daughter was being bullied in kindergarten. When she taught at the Juilliard School, she criticized Max, an apparently nervous BIPOC student, and was too harsh to force him to face the music of Bach. Perhaps Lydia's words and deeds towards Krista, who was her former student, should have been as we expected. It was never enough revealed how much Lydia's assistant, Francesca, was involved in the process.
The salvation of this film is that Lydia later got the chance to conduct in Philippine, even if it's an opportunity that's far from what she's done so far. When she met a massage parlor, she recognized what kind of country she finally got her chance.
Finally, I would mention one more thing. Another European stigmatized conductor has frequently visited our country and has given excellent performances, mostly with the understanding of some of the eminent figures in the Japanese classical music world. This seems to reflect Japan's tolerance of sexuality in old days, but we are experiencing a little excess-criticism these days about the matter. I wonder what the people who were strict about this issue think, although Japan appeared twice in the story.
