David Grey has proven to be of the best auteurs this century, both defying and fulfilling expectations with his two most recent Lost City of Z and Ad Astra. His earlier films skirted our attention when they came out, but look back and see they are outstanding vehicles for all performers and technicians involved as well as fine films in general. Renner shines. Cotillard is gorgeous. Phoenix shocks.
