An Emily Dickinson poem recited at the end has this film feel anachronistically in all times at once. The film humorously beckons into a complex relationship that is abusive but can't be shaken off, because Streep plays an eternal refugee from the Holocaust. The disturbing traumatic drama in the flashback scenes are much more powerful than the New World love story. An all around depressing movie.
