Sayuri is a horror manga adaptation that goes all over the map. It begins as a horror house film, but the laughs ensue with the quiet grandmother turns out to be a cigarette-smoking martial arts hippie. The ghost's backstory takes the film somewhere between family drama and social criticism. With the subject matter, the laughs stop. A film unsure of its identity but undeniably imaginative.
