Fiction and Realism
The film centers around the interactions between Kyokutei Bakin and Katsushika Hoku
At its core, the story revolves around the ideas of “fiction” and “reality,” with the characters wavering between the two. What does it mean for a fiction writer to spin “fiction”? And for an artist to paint “reality”? Is their daily life itself “real” or “illusory”?
The scene that gave me the strongest chills was the exchange between Tsuruya Nanboku and Bakin in the understage area during the "reality" segment. This scene explores the significance of creating stories across time, presenting both Bakin’s and Nanboku’s viewpoints, each of which has its own merits. Among them, Tsuruga Nanboku, played by Danshun Tachikawa, stood out with his uncanny and unwavering portrayal, firmly expressing his conviction without hesitation.
Looking at Yamada Futaro’s original work, The Eight Dog Chronicles (Hakkenden), this part appears to have been adopted almost as is. Of course, though we may consider this exchange between the two as “real,” it is likely a work of fiction. However, the intensity made it feel almost plausible.
Not just in this film but in all works, we are weaving “fiction,” but what role does that “fiction” fulfill? What is the relationship between story (fiction) and real life (reality)? It felt as though both the creators and the viewers were invited to reflect on these questions.
